Liverpool are expected to sign Virgil van Dijk by the end of the transfer window
Liverpool are expected to sign Virgil van Dijk by the end of the transfer window, according to Sky Sports.
The Reds publicly ended their chase for the defender last month after Southampton complained of an illegal approach.
Liverpool's position has not changed since they issue a statement last month, which read: "Liverpool would like to put on record our regret over recent media speculation regarding Southampton Football Club and player transfers between the two clubs.
"We apologise to the owner, board of directors and fans of Southampton for any misunderstanding regarding Virgil van Dijk. We respect Southampton's position and can confirm we have ended any interest in the player."
We understand Van Dijk still wants to move to Liverpool. He has not gone on a Southampton training camp in France.
There is no suggestion that Liverpool have done anything wrong since they apologised and ended their interest, while Southampton's position remains that Van Dijk is not for sale.
Chelsea and Manchester City are also interested in the player.
PDP GOVERNORS SET TO VISIT BUHARI IN LONDON TODAY
The NSA, Major General Babagana Munguno (retd.), selects six PDP governors to have lunch with President Buhari in London
Four governors selected for the trip are from the south-south, south-east, north-west and south-west respectively, while two others are from the north-east and north-central
The trip has been confirmed by a governor who is not among those travelling to see the president The office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) has selected six governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to visit President Muhammadu Buhari in London.
The Punch reports that the NSA, Major General Babagana Munguno (retd.), selected the six governors from the six geo-political zones of the country. Four governors selected for the trip are from the south-south, south-east, north-west and south-west respectively, while two others are from the north-east and north-central. Listed among the six governors are Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom) and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi).
The governors are expected to have lunch with the president before returning to the country on Wednesday, July 26.
The scheduled visit has come as a surprise to a governor who is not among those travelling to see Buhari.
The governor who did not want his name mentioned stated that those chosen for the journey were picked outside what he described as the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF).
He however noted that had the secretariat and the governors been contacted, the governors would have picked at least one of the PDP governors that had been critical of the Buhari.
He said: “Our colleagues are going to London to see the President.
But I’m not happy that someone like the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, or his Rivers State counterpart, Mr. Nyesom Wike, is not on the delegation.
“Though there are PDP governors on the delegation, we know ourselves and also know those we know are truly part of the opposition and those close to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
“The governors had been directed to be at the Presidential Wing of the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport, Abuja, tomorrow (Tuesday). From there, they will fly to the United Kingdom.”
Another governor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the trip.
He said the idea was suggested by some APC governors.
Meanwhile, the London visit of the PDP governors is coming shortly after President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, July 23, received a delegation of All Progressive Congress (APC) governors at the Abuja House, in London.

Bayern boss says €222m for Neymar is sign of weakness
The Brazil international has been tipped for a record move to the French capital, but the Bayern chief believes it means they have failed elsewhere
Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness feels it is an admission of failure for a club to spend big in the transfer market, as Paris Saint-Germain continue to be linked with an extraordinary €222 million swoop to sign Neymar from Barcelona.
The Ligue 1 giants are ready to smash the world transfer record by meeting the enormous release clause in the Brazil international's contract, although Barca defender Gerard Pique suggested via a Tweet on Sunday that the 25-year-old has been convinced to remain at Camp Nou.
The attacker is yet to confirm his future has been decided, though, and Hoeness believes such a transfer would be a bad sign.
"This is a sign of weakness," he said of the outlays being made across Europe.
"If I have to spend a lot of money to achieve nothing, it is more of a sign that I have not worked as well somewhere else. And that's why I cannot be interested in spending so much.
"Not the most expensive transfer is the best, but the one who does the most.
"I think that is why, in this shark basin - €100m, €200m - we must find our own way."
Bayern parted with a Bundesliga record fee of €41.5m to capture Corentin Tolisso from Lyon and brought in Niklas Sule from Hoffenheim for a reported €20m.
But they have also snared potential bargains in the form of Serge Gnabry, a cut-price arrival from Werder Bremen, James Rodriguez, signed on loan from Real Madrid, and free transfer Sebastian Rudy, as the team prepares to try and secure a sixth successive Bundesliga title.
RB Leipzig sprung a surprise to finish second to Bayern last season, but Hoeness expects a more predictable rival to vie for the championship in 2017-18.
"Leipzig will play a good season again, but the first challenger will surely be Borussia Dortmund," he said.
Bayern were without a sporting director in coach Carlo Ancelotti's first campaign in charge last term, after failing to replace Matthias Sammer, who stepped down in July 2016.
According to Hoeness, though, they are now close to making an appointment.
"We will announce a sporting director within the next six weeks," he said.

Jose Mourinho has confirmed more signing for Manchester United
The Red Devils' quest to strengthen their squad may have begun to stutter but the Portuguese manager remains hopeful of making two signings
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed he wants to add a midfielder and winger to his squad.
Though Mourinho would not divulge the names of his targets, Inter's Ivan Perisic and Nemanja Matic of Chelsea are thought to be at the top of his wishlist.
United have signed Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku so far in the transfer window, while Mourinho has previously suggested he may be forced to settle for just one more addition.
By comparison, Manchester City have spent an estimated £200million on six players, while Chelsea (four) and Liverpool (three) have recruited more fresh talent than United so far, but Mourinho remains calm about the situation.
"I don't know [the current situation], honestly I don't know, Ed [Woodward] is in control," the United boss told a media conference on Tuesday.
"He did Lindelof and Lukaku, he knows that I would like two more players but he also knows that I have balance, I depend on the situation, the market, and if my club is unable to do two players and just one, I accept that as a consequence of the market now.
"Our relationship is good and I just wait for good news, and he knows good news is to have the players, maybe just the [one] player as soon as possible because to work together with the team is really important.
"But I'm calm, I like my players, I like my squad, I trust them, so I'm calm and that's important."
He added: "I would like one player [to be] a midfield player, [that] would give me more options to the balance and the team.
"Another one an attacking player, especially that can play through the wings to give me more attacking options but I never speak about players that belong to other teams.
"I don't like if any manager comes and would say he would like one of my players, that's not correct. I would like two more players but probably I only get one."

- President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, July 23, met with some All Progressives Congress, (APC) governors and leaders in London
- The delegation included the APC party chairman, John Oyegun; governors of Imo, Kaduna, Kogi, Nasarawa and Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi
- President Buhari described the negative reports about him as lies
President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday, July 23, received a delegation of All Progressive Congress (APC) governors at the Abuja House, in London.
The Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha said the president was very cheerful and has not lost any bit of his sense of humour.
In a telephone conversation with Femi Adesina, the president's media adviser, following the meeting of the APC governors and leaders with President Buhari, he said the president was delighted to receive the delegation and asked each governor about affairs in his state.
Governor Okorocha said the party delegation spent more than an hour with President Buhari over lunch, and it was very clear from the discussions that he followed developments at home very closely.
When asked to react to all the negative things being said about him, the president just laughed, describing such negative reports as lies. Governor Okorocha said President Buhari was completely unperturbed by the cocktail of lies, adding that he sent his best wishes to Nigerians.
According to Okorocha Nigerians don’t have to worry at all, adding that President Buhari will be back as soon as the doctors give him the green light.
“By our visit to London today, the merchants of lies have been put out of business and Nigerians will not buy the garbage they have been selling. All those who look up to fake news can find better use for their time,” Governor Okorocha noted.
Governors Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa; Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna; Yahaya Bello of Kogi; and APC National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, were also in the delegation.

Costa ban from training
Chelsea manager, Antonio Conte, has refused to consider including Diego Costa in first-team training.
The Daily Mail reports Costa will not play for Conte again and has even been barred the player, from practising with his team-mates.
The 28-year-old is also not on the pre-season tour of China and Singapore, having been allowed to extend his summer break, in the hope a transfer deal can be struck.
Atletico Madrid is believed to be the only club keen on the Spain striker, but a deal is complicated, because Diego Simeone’s team are serving a transfer ban until the end of the year.
The two clubs have also been wrangling over the fee and the details of how and when payments would be made.
Saudi Arabia sends 198 Nigerians back
Some Nigerian deportees from Equatorial Guinea
The Federal Government on Saturday received no fewer than 198 Nigerians illegally residing in Saudi Arabia at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport at about 10 am.
This number was out of the 1,800 Nigerians living illegally in Saudi Arabia, who were given amnesty to return to the country.
The 198 persons including women and children returned with their luggage on board a Med-View aircraft.
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in Kano received the first batch of the returnees.
Mohammed Yahaya-Sani, the Consular at the Nigerian Consulate in Jedda, Saudi Arabia, who led the illegal immigrants to Nigeria, told newsmen at the airport that the Federal Government sponsored their return.
According to him, the illegal migrants voluntarily reported to the Nigerian Embassy to be returned to Nigeria in compliance with the three months evacuation notice issued to them by Saudi authorities, which will expire on July 24.
Yahaya-Sani said that contrary to speculations, the returnees were not deported rather they voluntarily accepted the amnesty offer granted them by the Saudi authorities for illegal immigrants to leave the country.
“They decided on their own to return to Nigeria. The Saudi authorities offered amnesty to all illegal immigrants to leave the country within three months,” he said.
The official handed over the returnees to NEMA officials at the airport who witnessed and documented their returns before they later departed to their various towns and villages.
Man City To Announce Mendy and Danilo deal
The Premier League club agreed a world-record fee for a defender for Mendy on Friday having already reached an agreement with Real Madrid for Danilo
Manchester City are set to confirm the signings of Real Madrid's Danilo and Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy, Goal understands.
City have had a £52 million (€57m) bid accepted for Mendy following weeks of negotiations, a deal which will make him the most expensive defender in history.
comes after Madrid agreed to sell Danilo for £26.5m (€30m) earlier this week.
City had been wary of competing interest from Chelsea in both players, but now believe they will get their men.
Danilo will join up with his new team-mates in Los Angeles in the coming days, and could even make his debut against his former club on Wednesday.
Madrid have been training in LA ahead of the International Champions Cup match, while City flew into California on Friday.
Goal reported in June that the Blues made an enquiry over the Brazilian towards the end of last season, but were informed he did not want to leave Madrid.
But while City pursued and subsequently missed out on Dani Alves, who left Juventus, the Italian club convinced Danilo to replace his compatriot in Turin.
The Bianconeri eventually cancelled the deal, however, leaving Danilo looking for a new club while City hunted for a new right-back.
Mendy, however, has been one of their priority targets for many months.
The Premier League side agreed terms with the France international several weeks ago, as reported by Goal in the aftermath of Bernardo Silva's signing
Monaco let Silva leave for £43m but dug in their heels for Mendy. City knew the initial asking price was £40m at the end of May but attempted to negotiate that figure down.
But following the collapse of the Alves deal and the subsequent decision to spend an initial £45m, rising to £50m, on Kyle Walker, Monaco upped their asking price and asked for at least what Spurs received for Walker.
With pre-season now well under way and following Aleksandar Kolarov's unexpected request to join Roma, City agreed to meet the French club's demands on Friday evening.
If both deals are completed as expected, City's summer spending will top £200m, having already signed Silva, Walker and Ederson.
Air force fighter jet bombing of IDP camp, what really happened
THE Defence Headquarters, yesterday, attributed the January 17,2017, erroneous airstrike of Internally Displaced Persons , IDPS, near the Camp at Rann in Kala-Balge Local Government Area, Borno State, by the Nigerian Air Force, to lack of appropriate marking of the area, near the camp where the IDPs were struck.
It said the location was not reflected in the operational map as a humanitarian base.
The DHQ said since the normal pattern for Boko Haram terrorists to form up, before attacking innocent civilians and troops is to amass, the event camp which it noted, was not captured in the humanitarian map,was mistaken as a Boko Haram terrorists settlement.
Director of Defence Information, Major General John Enenche, who addressed the media,in Abuja, said the air strike on the IDPs was a mistake.
”The main reason that caused the unfortunate airstrike near the IDPs camp at Rann, was lack of appropriate marking of the area, near the Camp where the IDPs were struck.
”Hitherto, people were not expected to amass at that location.
“Furthermore, the location was not reflected in the operational map as a humanitarian base.
“The normal pattern for Boko Haram Terrorists to form up, before attacking innocent civilians and troops is to amass.
“Hence, it appeared as a place that could equally be used for enemy activities,”Enenche explained.
According to him,”when mass movement was noticed through aerial satellite observation, it was taken for Boko Haram Terrorists activity, which needed to be neutralized with speed.”
He said in order to forestall the ugly development, the committee which probed the incident recommended that henceforth:”All locations where humanitarian activities take place in the Theatre of operation should be marked appropriately for ground and aerial identification in line with international best practices.”
”The geographical and spatial coordinates of all areas of humanitarian activities within the Theatre, should be provided to the Theatre Command Headquarters.
”There should be timely and mandatory exchange of information between stakeholders, for all activities in the Theatre of operation,”the committee, according to him, also advised.
Recall that following the incident, the Defence Headquarters had constituted Boards of Inquiry to investigate the incidents and come up with their reports.
However, some of the services and commands who were directly affected also constituted their boards of inquiry in line with service regulations.
In all, Defence Headquarters was equally provided with the reports of all the other boards constituted, to investigate the various incidents.
Enenche said ”going by the ethics and best military practices, all the reports were harnessed by a final Board at the Defence Headquarters, to have a clear picture of the incidents.”
”Thereafter, comprehensive reports of each of the incidents were produced.
”Each covered the cause of incidents and recommendations among others,” he added
Also speaking on the armed clash between some Nigerian Army and Police personnel under Operation LAFIYA DOLE, in Damaturu on 11 April 2017, which led to the death of one soldier and 3 policemen, with 7 other policemen injured, Enenche said the probe panel set up by the DHQ over the incident discovered that it was caused by an avoidable misunderstanding from exchange of words and later physical confrontation.
The committee, according to him, made some findings and came up with recommendations, to forestall future occurrences.
The recommendations,he explained were that:”Strict centralized operational and administrative control should be exercised, on all security agencies serving under Operation Lafiya Dole;Offenders in the incident are to be sanctioned appropriately, to serve as deterrence to other personnel in the Theatre of operation and the outcome of all disciplinary action, should be communicated to other parties.”
On the clash between the Nigerian Navy and Police personnel in Calabar on 30 May, 2017, that led to the death of two policemen and shooting of a naval personnel, Enenche said investigation into the act showed that it was a misunderstanding between a naval rating and a policeman that escalated , leading to the incident.
”It was found that, the immediate cause was a misunderstanding between a naval rating and a policeman that escalated.
”The incident equally resulted in the destruction of properties,”Enenche said.
According to him,to forestall future occurrence of such nature, the probe panel recommended that:”The Nigerian Navy and Police, should institute further investigation to identify erring personnel for sanctions and Security services should periodically remind their personnel to always comply with standing regulations, at all times and places.”
He urged all Nigerians and the general public to continue to support the Armed Forces of Nigeria to tackle security challenges, while the troops remain committed to carrying out their roles professionally.
